Regarding Geeta Patel’s representation on the Healthy Eating and Physical Activity (HEPA) for Adults Working and Strategic Groups. Evaluation for  2010-11 revealed that

“Geeta Patel has made contributions to development of the HEPA strategy by presenting a document to the working group. This outlines her contribution to the group in working with and supporting the voluntary sector to implement relevant actions within the HEPA Strategy for Adults.”

Voluntary organisations increase their knowledge of a range of policies and strategies.

During 2010/11, three workshops took place, the aim of which was to increase the knowledge of voluntary and community groups on a range of health and well being issues.

  • A workshop on Reducing the harms caused by Alcohol was held in December 2010. Evaluation showed a 41% increase in knowledge about the harms experienced by Asian community members and 47% increase in knowledge of Wolverhampton’s approach to improve matters on alcohol issues.

  • A second workshop was on the topic of Personalisation held in late December 2010. After an introduction by Sarah Norman, Director of Adults and Community Services in the City Council, Tony Rooke followed as the lead on Personalisation. We were given a national perspective on behalf of the Third sector by Gill Boston, followed by Paul Johnstone, who is working on new commissioning models for Personalisation. After each presentation there were small group discussions exploring the positives and negatives of the topic for local groups and organisations.

  • The Third workshop in March 2011 focused on The determinants of Health & Well Being: Reducing health inequalities in Wolverhampton. Working in collaboration with Wolverhampton Black Strategic Health Group, voluntary organisations were involved in discussions on the wider determinants of health, the practice of third sector organisations on the 9 equalities strands within the new Equalities Act and evaluating GP’s record in dealing with minority groups.

Before the workshop there was a 60% level of awareness of the determinants of health, which increased to 100% at the end of the workshop.

There was a 100% increase in knowledge and understanding of how the 9 equality strands could be used to improve third sector and statutory sector services.
